Education Innovations Profile
St. Joseph's Education Research Centre (SERC)
The St. Joseph’s Education Research Centre (SERC) was established within the Department of Education and Learning at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) in 2023 by Dr. Azim Gangji, Vice-President, Education at SJHH. The mission of SERC is to advance hospital-based education research, positioning SJHH as a leader in education and education scholarship. SERC operates on a collaborative and interprofessional model, working closely with physicians, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare providers to build capacity in education scholarship among hospital-based clinician-educators. SERC also aims to leverage SJHH's leadership in clinical integrative care and education within a network of organizations within St. Joseph’s Health System.
As part of its goals and operations, SERC is committed to collaborating with university-based educational research units, such as the McMaster Education Research, Innovation and Theory (MERIT) Program, to advance education science. SERC recently hired its first education scientist, Dr. Anita Acai, who is jointly appointed to SERC, MERIT, and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University. Dr. Acai brings an established program of research in education science and is looking forward to continuing to collaborate with SERC leadership to strengthen education scholarship within and beyond the hospital.
